Sound familiar?

You still want to do hard things.

You just don’t trust your body to keep up anymore.

  • You see a race, a new workout, or someone lifting heavy and immediately think, I want to do that. Then you remember what happened the last time you tried.
  • You’ve started modifying movements, avoiding certain exercises, or holding back because you’re never quite sure what’s going to hurt.
  • You catch yourself blaming your age, your weight, or the fact that you haven’t been consistent enough.
  • But deep down, you don’t want easier workouts. You want to get back to pushing yourself without constantly worrying about another injury.

Your squat is where we start. Getting back to the things you love is where we’re going.

Why 5 days

You’ve been told to stop squatting. You’re not ready to stop doing hard things.

Maybe your doctor told you to stop squatting so deep. Maybe a coach told you to modify. Maybe your friends joke that “this is just what happens when you get older.” Or maybe you’re the one who keeps saying “my squat sucks,” “I just can’t get any lower,” or “my knees can’t handle that anymore.”

Except… you still want to lift. You still want to sign up for the race, hike the mountain, take the hard class, chase your kids, jump on the box, and see what your body is capable of. You don’t want someone to tell you to stop pushing yourself. You want to know how to push yourself without ending up hurt again.

That’s what we’re figuring out over these 5 days. Not whether you’re “allowed” to squat. Why your squat feels stuck — and what we can change so you can keep building from here.

  1. 1Why does my squat feel so much harder than it used to?Squat video + CO₂ tolerance test

Let me actually see what happens when YOU squat. No trying to make it look good. No stretching for 20 minutes first.

You’ll film your squat exactly as it is today so I can look at where you shift, compensate, hesitate, lose depth, or work harder than you need to.

We’ll also test your CO₂ tolerance to see how your nervous system responds when your body is asked to handle more.

By the end of Day 1: You’ll stop guessing what I would “fix” about your squat and actually know what I see.

  2. 2Why can’t I get any lower?Ankle test

Your ankles might be stopping you before your knees ever get a vote.

If you feel stuck above parallel, your heels lift, your feet turn out, or your knees start complaining when you go deeper, today we find out why.

A quick ankle test can show us whether you actually have the motion required for the squat you’re trying to do.

By the end of Day 2: You’ll know whether your ankles are part of the reason you keep saying, “I just can’t squat that low.”

  3. 3Why does something always pinch, pull, or hurt when I go deeper?Hip + low back test

Let’s find out what happens at the exact point your squat falls apart. Maybe your hip pinches. Maybe your back rounds. Maybe you shift onto one leg. Maybe there’s simply a point where your body says NOPE.

We’ll test your hips and low back to see what has enough movement — and what the rest of your body has been compensating for.

By the end of Day 3: You’ll have a much better answer than “I guess my hips are just tight.”

  4. 4Why do I fold forward when I squat?Mid back + shoulder test

Plot twist: it might not be your legs. Your mid-back and shoulders change how you brace, how upright you can stay, and how comfortably you can eventually put weight on your squat.

If holding a bar makes your squat suddenly look completely different, I want to know why.

By the end of Day 4: You’ll know whether something ABOVE your hips has been changing everything happening below them.

  5. 5Can I actually change this?Retest + what’s next

Same squat. Five days more information. Now we retest. You’ll film your squat again, put it next to Day 1, and I’ll help you see what changed — and what I’d work on next.

Because the goal was never to prove you can do one perfect squat. The goal is to stop assuming “I can’t do that anymore” — and start figuring out “what would my body need to be able to do that again?”

By the end of Day 5: You have another option besides giving up the things you love or pushing through and hoping you don’t get hurt. You can learn how to build your body toward them.

Your coach

I’m Dr. Nicole. And nothing makes me rage quite like, “Well… just stop doing that.”

If your doctor, PT, or coach told you to stop squatting, running, lifting, or doing the thing you love because it hurts — I want to know why it hurts.

I’m a physical therapist who believes almost everyone can train. My job isn’t to make your life smaller so your body can handle it. It’s to figure out how to build your body to handle the life you want.

Questions you might have

I used to be athletic. I’m definitely not right now. Is this for me?

Yes — this is exactly who it’s built for. You don’t need to be in the shape you used to be in to start. Needing a modification isn’t failing the movement. It’s how we meet your body where it is today, so you can build from here.

What if my knee, hip or back actually hurts?

Pain is information, and you’ll go at your own pace. This challenge is education and movement testing, not medical advice or a diagnosis, and it doesn’t replace care from your own provider. If you have sharp pain, numbness, or a recent injury, check with your provider before you start.

What do I need, and how much time does it take?

You’ll need a phone to film your squat and a little floor space. Plan on about 10–15 minutes a day.

What happens after Day 5?

You’ll know what your squat needs, and I’ll show you how to keep building it. If you want help taking that back into your training, I’ll point you to the next step.

This challenge is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program.
